Back 9 USA began with two friends and the idea that a great design, both in a logo and a hat, could change the world (at least, the headwear world). Fed up with hats that barely belonged in the back window of a car, let alone on your head, Andy Hydorn and Harry Conforti conspired to make a hat that actually fit with a logo that worked as well on the first tee as it would at your local watering hole. So in 1997, they put their clever design and passion for golf to work as Back 9 USA.
Friends from their days as members of Indian Ridge Country Club in Andover, MA, Andy and Harry realized that their combined talents - Andy's experience and contacts within the golf industry; Harry's expertise in entrepreneurial ventures and the liquor and spirits industry - fit perfectly and set out to make the best hat possible.
Just like the game of golf, their first attempt at hat design wasn't exactly up to par, neither was their second... or, well, you get the idea. The biggest challenge they faced was going against the industry norm by designing their own specifications for their hats. Most companies simply buy factory design hats (which is all well and good if you don't mind a poor fit and cheap fabric) then they sew a label into it to call it their own. Determined to design their own hat, they went through trial and error to find out what worked (stitching around the base of the hat is a must) and what didn't (some red fabrics bleed when they get wet). Their determination and persistence paid off when their design was made to their exact specifications. They decided to call their first hat the Standard, named for the new standards it set in terms of fit and quality fabrics used. Using the Standard fit as their design template, the Throwback and Accent hat were added to their introductory line-up.
Slowly but surely, word of the Back 9 design and Standard hat grew. The guys recognized an additional opportunity in custom logo and began shoring up blank headwear business. Using blank Back 9 designed hats, such as the Standard; they gained more awareness by creating custom looks for local restaurants, nationally known beer and liquor companies, as well as major golf manufacturers.
Today, Back 9 USA designs, manufactures, and sells over 25 Back 9 USA branded headwear and apparel products through their website and several retail locations throughout New England. Back 9 USA also continues to design and manufacture custom headwear and golf accessories for private label companies such as Callaway Golf, Ben Hogan, Odyssey, Top Flite and Cruzan Rum.
