AMATEUR GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP ![]() The success of the Rice Planters Amateur includes a variety of sponsorship efforts and donations from the surrounding Charleston community, along with Back 9 USA as one of its biggest sponsors. For the past two years, Back 9 USA has generously donated a selection of goods to players competing in the tournament as well as providing clothing for the Tournament Players Committee. “Teaming up with the Rice Planters Amateur has always been an easy decision. It’s one of the best amateur events out there; tons of guys who are now on the PGA Tour have played in this event,” said Andy Hydorn, president and co-founder of Back 9 USA. “We’re proud to be a part of it because we want to support competitive levels of amateur golf. We’ve even partnered up with former players Josh Younger (AUS) and Matthew Galloway (USA) as they work towards getting their Tour cards.” This year, Back 9 USA has stepped up to offer their patented TOURevolution™ pom-pom headcover for participants in the Snee-Am, a sponsor/Rice Planter participant golf tournament that kicks off the week. The custom designed driver headcover features the Rice Planters logo and yarn pom-pom like old school knit headcovers. Additionally, players in the 2009 Rice Planters will receive Back 9 USA hats when registering for the event prior to round 1 and the Tournament Players Committee will be wearing Back 9 USA performance polos all week.
“We are excited to continue this relationship with Back 9 USA. Our players rave about the hats and shirts Back 9 USA has provided them at registration. The Rice Planters Amateur is successful because of generous sponsors like Back 9 USA and would not be a preeminent event in the Southeast without such support,” said Bruce Fleming, Tournament Director.
The 37th Rice Planters Amateur Golf Championship will be held at Snee Farm Country Club in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, June 23 - 27, 2009. The entry fee of $250 (payable to Snee Farm Country Club) and the completed application are due by May 15, 2009 as the tournament is limited to a field of 90 players. The field will be posted shortly thereafter on the Rice Planters’ website: www.sneefarmcc.com/rpa About Rice Planters Amateur Golf Championship Created by Dick Horne, a local amateur golfer, in 1973, the Rice Planters Amateur Golf Competition continues its thirty-seven year legacy as one of the premier golfing tournaments of its kind. Taking place June 23rd through 27th at the Snee Farm Country Club in Mount Pleasant, the tournament continues to attract prominent players from all over the world. Today, Back 9 USA designs, manufactures, and sells Back 9 USA branded headwear, apparel and accessories not only for the golf course but for everyday life as well. Back 9 USA also creates custom headwear and golf accessories for private label companies such as major golf manufacturers, non-profit organizations, and adult beverage companies. TOUREVOLUTION™ HEADCOVER AT 2009 PGA MERCHANDISE SHOW ![]() The patented TOURevolution™ headcover, like the rest of Back 9 USA’s product line, combines the ingenuity of modern materials with classic designs. By pairing elements of the traditional knit pom-pom headcover with the newer, stronger and easily embroidered neoprene material, the introduction of a custom logo TOURevolution headcover brings together the ultimate in branding, club protection, and old school golf style. “This is the ultimate accessory for green grass shops looking for something different,” said Andy Hydorn, president and co-founder of Back 9 USA. “The pom-pom headcover gives a bold branding opportunity but still retains the classic look with the pom-pom that everyone loves. By having a variety of colors and a minimum order of 36, it’s hard to beat.”
Back 9 USA is sweetening the deal by offering a special for orders placed at the PGA Show: purchase the minimum 36 and receive an additional 6 headcovers free. Available in 1, 3, and X, the headcover comes in four sock colors and nine pom-pom color combinations to choose from. As is standard in most headcovers, the TOURevolution™ features a long sock for optimum club protection and fits the larger clubs up to 460cc. Custom embroidery is available along the head to create a one-of-a-kind look.
Back 9 USA originally designed one-of-a-kind TOURevolution™ headcovers exclusively for Callaway Golf staff professionals at the 2006 Masters and for Gary Player at the 2007 Masters. The buzz from those events led to specialty headcovers for Callaway Golf’s 25th Anniversary as well as the first-ever Wayne Gretzky Invitational on the Nationwide Tour. Back 9 USA has subsequently been commissioned to design headcovers for the US and European teams at the 2009 Solheim Cup and for the US Open at Pebble Beach in 2010. “The response to our specialty headcovers has been overwhelming because everyone who sees them wants one! We are excited that we have come up with a solution that allows us to embroider these headcovers domestically. This solution makes them a great option for the many green grass customers looking to sell in the headcover category that has been virtually taken away by the golf club manufacturers,” Hydorn said. Back 9 USA will be exhibiting at the 2009 PGA Merchandise Show in the Apparel Zone section in booth 8293 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, January 29-31.
![]() Back 9 USA’s headwear line has expanded to provide a broader range of colors in some of the styles that have been favorites among their fans. Younger fans and those with smaller sized heads have not been forgotten with the addition of junior and ladies sized caps. “The new line is a direct result of our customer’s input so we’re going a little deeper in some of the styles with more choices of colors and reaching out to juniors and ladies with sizing that gives them a real Back 9 fit,” stated Andy Hydorn, president and co-founder of Back 9 USA. “Fit has always come first for our headwear so we’ve made it our priority to make sure that anyone can wear a Back 9 hat.”
The Jr. Blackstone, the Pebble Beach in Pink and the Reunion all offer a smaller fit that that lives up to Back 9 USA’s standards. The first, the Jr. Blackstone, is a revised version of the Original Blackstone, a Cool Mesh hat with unstructured garment washed cotton front panels, contrast detailing and softer mesh back panels. The Jr. Blackstone is available in four color combinations that all feature the Back 9 star logo: Black/Stone, Kelly Green/Navy, Navy/Charcoal, Stone/Chocolate. The other two hats, the Pebble Beach in Pink and the Reunion, are specifically for women. Back 9’s most popular hat is the Pebble Beach but for the ladies Pink version, a super-soft faux suede flip visor and button were added. The Reunion is a white Accent hat that features the Back 9 star logo in pink felt with a playful pink/black/red plaid on the flip visor, button, and adjustable strap.
Additional colors for the current line include: Hazeltine (Throwback visor) in White/Navy and White, Merion (HYBRID Jersey Mesh – one size fits most) in Maroon/Navy and Navy/White, Myopia (Standard adjustable) in Red, Navy, and White, Pebble Beach (Contrast Stitch adjustable) in Chocolate, Kelly Green, Ice, and Maroon, and Scarlet (Alternating Mesh Velcro adjustable) in Ice/Navy, and Navy/Silver. With the addition of the new styles, it was time to say goodbye some of the old ones. These “vintage” hats are available for $9.99 in the new sale section of the Back 9 USA online store. Back 9 USA’s entire product line of golf headwear, apparel and accessories is available at www.back9usa.com and in select retail locations.
ANNOUNCE OFFICIAL AGREEMENT TO OUTFIT THE MEN’S GOLF TEAM ![]() Back 9 USA, known predominately for great fitting hats and patented TOURevolution™ headcovers, recently expanded their product offering to include golf inspired performance apparel. The Long Beach Men’s Golf team will be sporting the new line of performance enhanced polos featuring ThermaFlow™, a moisture management fabric that is designed to maximize air flow so the wearer remains dry and comfortable no matter what playing conditions they are facing; on or off the course. “The opportunity to partner with Back 9 USA really gives us the best of both worlds – quality and performance along with a greater selection and input into what products we get to choose from”, said Bill Poutre, the newly appointed head men’s golf coach for the 49ers and three-time Conference Coach of the Year for his work as former head coach at the University of Hartford.
In addition to outfitting the team, Back 9 USA has also signed on as the Presenting Sponsor of the Del Walker Intercollegiate to be held October 15-17 at Virginia Country Club in Long Beach, CA. Almost 20 years ago, Long Beach State had considered dropping the golf program but with former 49er’s golf coach Del Walker’s efforts, the program lives on and the tournament is a tribute to his commitment to the school and its golf program.
“We are thrilled to be able to work with the Long Beach State 49ers men’s golf team. A couple of us here at Back 9 were fortunate enough to play college golf and it’s a dream to be able to outfit a team to help them perform at the highest levels of competition. Our continuing efforts to work with college and junior programs made our partnership with Long Beach a natural fit”, said Andy Hydorn, President and co-founder of Back 9 USA.
HURRICANE JUNIOR GOLF TOURNAMENTS new competitive junior golf tournament ![]() “We are thrilled to be able to show our support for junior golf programs like the Hurricane Jr. Golf Tour that Mario has started. We all grew up with the game and understand how important it is to have an opportunity to learn good fundamentals and also have a chance to compete,” stated Andy Hydorn, president and co-founder of Back 9 USA. Added Mario Conte, President of HJGT: “It’s great to have Back 9 USA as a sponsor. The hats have been a great hit with the kids already and the shirts look and feel incredible.” Back 9 USA's line of golf hats, apparel and accessories combine the ingenuity of modern materials with classic designs that all start with a great fit. "We began developing our own line of performance-inspired golf apparel for players like ourselves because we needed a shirt that would work as well on the course as it would at the office. " said Mr. Hydorn.
HJGT Staffers will be wearing 3 shirts from Back 9 USA’s new line: the Greystone, a classic golf polo; the Dornoch, a striped polo with raglan sleeves, and the Kittansett, a sleek jacquard polo. Each shirt is designed with ThermaFlow™ moisture management to keep the HJGT team dry and comfortable despite Southern summer temperatures. Additionally, HJGT members will also receive special discounts on Back 9 USA apparel and headwear.
![]() Back 9 USA began developing their own line of performance-inspired golf apparel for players, like themselves, who needed apparel that worked as well on the course as it would at the 19th hole or the office. The shirts and outwear pieces are designed with the golf lifestyle in mind. “We are very excited about the new line because it offers the best of both worlds in terms of style and performance. We’ve been working for awhile to come up with a product that was worthy of the Back 9 USA label and we’re proud to say that these shirts live up to our standards,” enthused Andy Hydorn, president and co-founder of Back Nine USA. “Each piece was inspired by some less than ideal, but definitely more realistic playing conditions at some of our favorite courses. The pieces were designed to let you concentrate on your game and not the heat, wind, rain, etc.” First up is the Greystone, named after the Greystone Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama, that Mr. Hydorn battled in mid-June. The design of the shirt is a tribute to the classic golf shirt with open hem sleeves and tennis tail hem but modernized with ThermaFlow™, Back 9 USA’s moisture management technology that increases the breathability of the fabric so that moisture is immediately wicked away to keep the wearer cooler and drier.
The Dornoch offers a sleeker, more athletic adaptation of the golf shirt.
Sporty stripes on the body of the shirt complement the plain raglan sleeves that allow the wearer a full range of movement. The shirt is also enhanced with ThermaFlow™ to keep you cool and dry from the front nine to the back nine.
“We’ve updated the fabrics and the feel of the traditional golf shirt to make them more modern and stylish without abandoning what most people are looking for in golf attire – comfort and quality,” explained Mr. Hydorn. “By using the technology of ThermaFlow, the wearer gets a higher level of comfort that any golfer would appreciate any day on the course.” The Kittansett polo shirt was designed to transition easily throughout your day – from work to play or to dinner, the shirt’s jacquard design offers a little dressier version of the golf shirt without being too stuffy or overly stylish. In addition to the new polos, a layering piece and a rain jacket are included in the expanded line. Mr. Hydorn realized a need for a layering piece that adds warmth without bulk having played at the Sankaty Head Pro-Am on the island of Nantucket each October. The Keane, also a product of temperamental New England weather, protects from elements of wind, rain, and cold without interfering with the players movement. The new line up, along with Back 9 USA’s headwear and accessories are currently available at the Back 9 USA online store: www.back9usa.com and select stores in the New England area.
![]() “We are very excited to work with the Ginn team. It’s no coincidence that we wanted to work with a company that gives as much attention to their highly acclaimed golf courses as they do their guests overall experience. It’s a philosophy that fits perfectly with Back 9 and allows us to get in front of people who truly live and appreciate the golf lifestyle” stated Andy Hydorn, president and co-founder of Back 9 USA. Added Bobby Ginn, Chairman and CEO of Ginn Resorts: “By offering Back 9 USA headwear, we continue our own commitment to provide quality products that our guests have come to expect from us.” Back 9 USA's line of golf hats, apparel and accessories combine the ingenuity of modern materials with classic designs that all start with a great fit. "Fit comes first at Back 9, especially when it comes to hats. No matter what may be embroidered on a hat, if it doesn’t fit, it won’t be worn. It’s called headwear for a reason. The difference is that every Back 9 hat is made to our specifications. From the circumference and profile, to the choice of fabrics to the finishing touch of embroidery techniques, we make hats people actually want to wear" said Mr. Hydorn. The Ginn Championship at Hammock Beach is the first of Ginn’s four Champions Tour, PGA Tour, and LPGA events on the 2008 professional golf calendar. It also occupies a key spot on the Florida Swing, which is always one of the most competitive stretches of golf during the season. ![]() AND SPORT PERFORMANCE POLO Photos Courtesy of David Colt |
